What Is an Air Suspension System?
An air suspension system is a style of vehicle suspension that's powered by an electric pump or compressor that pumps air into flexible bellows that are typically made out of a textile-reinforced type of rubber. Additionally, Pro Car Mechanics describes air suspension as a replacement to the leaf suspension or coil spring system with airbags composed of polyurethane and rubber. A compressor inflates the bags to a certain pressure in order to behave like springs. Air suspension also differs from hydropneumatic suspension because it uses pressurized air instead of pressurized liquid.
Air Spring
air spring, load-carrying component of an air suspension system used on machines, automobiles, and buses. A system used on buses consists of an air compressor, an air-supply tank, leveling valves, check valves, bellows, and connecting piping. Basically, an air-spring bellows is a column of air confined within a rubber and fabric container that looks like an automobile tire or two or three tires stacked on top of one another. The check valves admit additional air to the bellows from the air-supply tank to maintain vehicle height when the load is increased, and the leveling valves vent excess air from the bellows when the vehicle rises because of unloading. The vehicle thus remains at a fixed height regardless of load. Although an air spring is flexible under normal loads, it becomes progressively stiffer when compressed under an increased load.
Air Shock Struts
A strut is a major structural part of a suspension. It takes the place of the upper control arm and upper ball joint used in conventional suspensions. Because of its design, a strut is lighter and takes up less space than the shock absorbers in conventional suspension systems.
A struts perform two main jobs. First, struts perform a damping function. A piston is attached to the end of the piston rod and works against hydraulic fluid to control spring and suspension movement. Just like shock absorbers, the valving generates resistance to forces created by the up and down motion of the suspension. Also like shock absorbers, a strut is velocity sensitive, so that the amount of resistance can increase or decrease depending on how fast the suspension moves.
A struts also perform a second job. Unlike shock absorbers, struts provide structural support for the vehicle suspension, support the spring, and hold the tire in an aligned position. Additionally, they bear much of the side load placed on the vehicle's suspension. As a result, struts affect riding comfort and handling as well as vehicle control, braking, steering, wheel alignment and wear on other suspension.
Air Spring Features
1. Air fitting: A tapped hole allowing for the spring to be fed from the air compressor
2. Nut/bolt/mount: The method for attaching the air spring to the component. Some air springs incorporate a bolt and air fitting combination device.
3..Bead plate: Crimped metal plate enclosing the spring and allowing attachment. This is typically forged steel, cast zinc alloy or cast aluminum.
4. Bellows: The physical, multi-layer material withholding the compressed gas. Usually made of neoprene or rubber.
5. Girdle: Only found in air springs of convoluted design, separating the bellows chambers.
6. Bumper: An optional layer of padding protecting the piston from damage if the air spring fails.
7. Piston: The component attached to the machinery requiring suspension, which is in turn supported by the enclosed air. The piston housing is typically attached with further hardware.
Air Suspension Compressor Working
The air system works by pumping compressed air into air bags or springs made of textile-reinforced rubber via compressed air lines. The air compressor is an electric or engine-driven pump that’s usually attached to the car frame and found under the hood. It draws in outside air, compresses it, and uses the compressed air to fill the air springs to “lift” the vehicle’s chassis from the axle.
Aside from being the main part of an air system, air compressors are also coupled with air tanks in some vehicles. This allows the driver to inflate tires when driving off-road, for example. Air compressors can also be used to re-seat a tire that has slipped off of its rim. Air compressors also have a number of other pneumatic-type applications like maintaining the PSI for air horns, etc.
Air Suspension Compressor
hat is the Air Suspension Air Compressor all about?
While you might be most familiar with gas-filled shocks and struts, there are actually several different suspension types used today. One is air suspension, which relies on air-filled rubber air bags to provide the cushioning and ride quality necessary. This is actually a more advanced type of suspension than conventional shocks/struts and coil-over springs, but it does have its problems. These systems are inherently more complex than others, and require a significant number of components in order to operate. One of the most important is the air suspension air compressor.
The compressor pumps air into the air bags to raise the chassis off the axles and provide good ride quality. It works in conjunction with a dryer which is often made into the same assembly, although this varies from one automaker to another. If the compressor fails, your air suspension will not be able to adjust, and will be stuck at the inflation level where the compressor quit. Eventually, the air in the air springs will leak out, and the vehicle will sag.
